You and Your Barrister

Why do I need two lawyers?

Most legal cases need a variety of different skills. Solicitors generally deal with the day-to-day preparation of cases and documents. They only involve barristers when they need specialist advice about a difficult area of the law, to draft documents or for 'advocacy' (presenting a case in court). Barristers are trained as specialist advisers and advocates and do not have the facilities or expertise to do the work solicitors carry out. While some solicitors do have similar expertise in advocacy, many find it easier to use a barrister (also called counsel) for specialist work. The two roles do not overlap and the two should have a good working relationship. Together the solicitor and barrister are your team.
