Practice Summary
Michael has particular experience of acting in cases involving Customs and Excise diversion frauds, confiscation orders, conspiracy to defraud and fraudulent evasion of duty on alcohol and tobacco products.
Michael has been the junior counsel to Queens counsel in both fraud and murder trials.
Notable Cases
R v Lumsden (2011) - VHCC contracted case. Defending one of 16 accused of a national/international cigarette smuggling ring, who attempted to smuggle 64 million counterfeit cigarettes into the UK, in an attempt to evade £10m in duty. The gang had links with the Italian Mafia. International evidence (involving EU and non-EU nations) obtained and used. Secured a suspended sentence following trial.
R v Chadwick (2010) - Led defence junior. Defendant charged with murder of a man who was found with serious injuries following an attack in Doncaster.
R v A (2010) - Defence counsel. Defendant charged with cruelty to a child.
R v Hewitt (2010) - Defence counsel. Defendant charged with possession of drugs with intent to supply.
R v Gooch (2010) - Defence counsel. Defendant charged with rape.
R v Rollason (2010) - Defence counsel. Defendant charged with supplying class A drugs.
